protractor, rulerIf you need a refresher or an introduction to the math you need for power engineering courses, Lakeland College has an online course for you.

Gain confidence in your math and physics skills before you start a 4th class power engineering program. What you learn will also help you in your continuing power engineering studies and when you write provincial licensing exams.

In three months you'll cover both applied math and applied mechanics (physics). 

This course is offered August – June. Choose the course session that works best for you.

This course begins on the 20th of each month. Register by the 15th of the month that you wish to begin.

The Pre-Engineering Math & Applied Mechanics course is self-paced, self-directed, fully online and live attendance times are not required.

You will have up to 3 months to complete this course. A one-time course extension is available for this online course.

An instructor is available for support through email if needed.

Specific skills related to applied math and mechanics will be covered in lectures and assignments. You'll have quizzes at the end of each unit. 

Your final has 75 multiple choice questions. The final exam also requires a proctor.

Applied mathematics includes:

  • basic mathematics
  • fractions
  • percentages
  • equations
  • geometry
  • trigonometry
  • units
  • mensuration

Applied mechanics includes:

  • introduction to applied mechanics 
  • scalar and vector properties
  • movement and beams
  • energy, power, pressure
  • friction
  • simple machines
  • stress and strain
  • linear, rotational motion

Recommended Supplies:

  • scientific calculator
  • dictionary
  • drawing kit (including protractor and ruler)

Course length: 3 months
Cost: $295   *fees subject to change
Delivery: online, self-paced, live attendance times are not required
Prerequisite: none

Before your course start date, you will receive a welcome email from our registration team. This communication will contain instructions and login information to access the course content.  On your course start date, you will be able to access your course content with a laptop/computer and internet connection. 

You will have up to 3 months to complete this course; however, you can work as quickly as you wish to complete the required course content. A one-month course extension option is also available.  Please note: A Course Extension Form must be submitted to energyconed@lakelandcollege.ca at least 14 days prior to your course end date. Fees apply. 

This is a self-paced course design; therefore, there are no required live attendance times.  You can log in to your course as often as you wish to complete the course content.  

Note: All course content must be completed prior to your course end dates. 

Yes, a final exam is required for this course.  This exam is online. When you are ready to schedule your exam, you will be required to submit an exam request.  Detailed information regarding the exam request process will be available in your online course. Exams must be written in a professional setting. 

  1. Schedule an appointment with an approved exam proctor (refer to the proctor requirements). 
  2. Submit your exam request form with your preferred date/time. Note: *A separate form is required for each exam and forms must be submitted with a minimum of 5 business days of notice (excludes weekends and holidays). 
  3. A confirmation email with instructions will be sent to you and your exam proctor within 24 hours of your exam date. Note: Exams are flexible and can be scheduled during day, evening or weekend hours

Note: Exam fees are the responsibility of the student.

An exam proctor is an exam supervisorThe exam supervisor will monitor your exam following the exam requirements.   Examples of suitable exam proctors are exam testing agency personnel librarian, principal, superintendent, teacher, lawyer, accountant etc. Exam fees may be charged for exam services and are the responsibility of the student. 

You will receive access to the course content through our online learning portal, D2L.  A formula book is provided for this online course. No other textbooks are requiredA list of required supplies is also available. (ie. calculator etc.). 

An estimated 2-4 hours per week is suggested to successfully work through the course contentAdditional time may be required to prepare for course exams. 

Once you have successfully completed the Pre-Engineering Math course, your grade will appear on your Lakeland College transcript.

Note: All course requirements must be completed within the course dates. You can request a transcript by emailing transcripts@lakelandcollege.ca
