As the President and CEO of Lakeland College, I believe authentic leadership goes beyond the office; it requires being actively engaged alongside our students. On October 7, I had the incredible opportunity to join our crop technology students as they wrapped up harvest on the Student Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland (SMF). As part of their experience working on the SMF, our second-year crop technology students work together to harvest and market this year’s crop, as well as plan what to seed in the spring. Together, they harvest over 950 acres of crops, which can include wheat, barley, canola, peas or other crops. With the guidance of faculty advisors, the students are making six-figure decisions on our commercial farm, applying what they’ve learned and reaping the benefits of watching the results in real-time.

Working with our students in the field not only let me help with the harvest but also gave us a chance to learn together. I’m passionate about hands-on learning, and it’s great to see our students apply what they’ve learned in the classroom. I’m very proud of their hard work and dedication.

I genuinely believe that participating in hands-on activities bridges the gap between education and practical application. It’s essential for our students to develop the skills and confidence they need to thrive in their future careers. I hope my involvement inspires them, showing that leadership is about being present and involved in the learning process.

Looking ahead, I’m excited about getting out of the office more and engaging with our students in hands-on learning experiences. When we work together, I believe we create an environment where practical experience complements academic achievement. By being actively involved, I can foster a deeper connection and spark enthusiasm for learning. Together, we can elevate student success and make a lasting impact!

Until next time,

Alice
