What it is

The Lakeland College educational co-op internship is an optional 14-week paid work experience for business administration diploma students.

The placement takes place between year 1 and 2 of the diploma program. You have an opportunity to gain experience in your chosen career path.

The co-op is supervised and evaluated by Lakeland's placement coordinator and your employer.

Why participate

A co-op internship provides many benefits including:

  • exposure to different career paths
  • relevant work experience for résumé building
  • making industry contacts
  • potential employment opportunities
  • applying classroom theory in a business setting
  • gain vital soft skills (communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills)

You are paid by the employer during the co-op placement.

Note: The co-op internship is not available to international students

To be eligible for a co-op placement, you must:

  • be registered in the business administration diploma (any of the five majors)
  • maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in the fall semester
  • be enrolled in a minimum course load of 12 credits (15 credits preferred)
  • participate in an interview with the placement coordinator
  • agree to represent Lakeland College with appropriate professional conduct

It's easy to apply. And, there’s no application fee.

Fill out the application form below before the Oct 30 deadline.

You will be asked:

  • if you would relocate for the work term
  • about your previous work experience
  • about your volunteer experience
  • about your extracurricular activities

Notes

  1. You may apply to an established co-op placement employer or arrange an internship with a business of your choice. However, this employer must be approved by the program coordinator.
  2. Placements aren't finalized until January to ensure you have maintained a 2.0 GPA

If the application is accepted, you’ll:

  • have a face-to-face meeting with the placement coordinator
  • pay a registration fee (approx $600) due with your semester 2 tuition fees
  • prepare for your placement by participating in 7 workshops, beginning in mid-January.

These workshops are to help you as the placement process is competitive. Topics include:

  • job search skills and resume writing
  • interview skills
  • communications skills
  • best practices for employees

You’ll apply and interview for your potential position.

Employers who interview are under no obligation to make job offers, so the placement isn’t guaranteed.

If your interview with the employer is successful:

  • The employer will send an offer letter to you.
  • You may be required to sign an acceptance agreement.

As an employer, bringing in an educational co-op student helps you. Learn more on our employer information page.
