Lakeland College has the facilities and instructors to introduce you to welding or broaden your skill set.

Currently available courses

Hone your welding skills so you can make successful repairs through a two-day welding course at Lakeland College.

This course is designed for farmers, ranchers and others who may need to fix broken equipment. Not only is the skill convenient, it could also save time and money when the welding is done well. 

You may also want to take this course if you are considering a career in the welding industry. Immersing yourself in this hands-on weekend will help you decide if this is right path for you.

You’ll master techniques so you’ll make quality, durable welds. You’ll learn and practice in Lakeland’s welding lab. Learn two types of industrial welding: metal inert gas (MIG) and ARC welding. You’ll also learn how to do oxy fuel cutting.

     **Age 16+ eligible to register. 

What to bring?

Please note: if you do not own the following equipment, Lakeland College has some on hand for you to borrow for the weekend. 

  • protective apparel (coveralls/ overalls)
  • one pair leather welder's gloves (gauntlet type)
  • one welder's hat or beanie
  • approved safety glasses 
  • pliers -- slip-joint or vice grip
  • CSA approved safety steel toe boots
  • welding helmet if you have one (not mandatory)

Course dates for 2025: 

  • January 25 & 26
  • March 15 & 16
  • May 24 & 25

Course length: 2 days; Saturday & Sunday 9 am - 4 pm
Total hours: 12 hours
Cost: $360 + GST

Unleash your creativity with metal art. Join us for a hands-on workshop where you'll craft your own unique projects while developing a new skill. Get ready to spend time in the shop, cutting, tacking, and bringing your metal art to life. This one-day course offers an introduction to welding techniques.

Dive into the basics of Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) or TIG welding and start mastering your skills. GTAW needs steady hands – we will be sure to cover different techniques and body positioning to help build a technique that works for you.

This weekend course will include:

  • Basic GTAW/TIG theory
  • Welding on carbon steel
  • Welding demonstrations on aluminum and stainless steel
  • Continuous feed and dabbing techniques

Initial 'B' Pressure & Requalification tests are available. Costs vary between $260 and $340 per test based on your test requirements.

The Canadian Welding Bureau certifies and registers welders and companies who work with steel structures. Testing is available to both apprentices and journeyperson welders. Lakeland offers option prep courses as well as testing at the Vermilion campus.

CWB examiners will be on-site in Vermilion on the following scheduled test dates:

  • April 9, 2025
  • June 11, 2025

Cost is $150 per position and $150 per check test.

Need a place to brush up on your skills before your exam? Book a booth in our welding lab.

  • $100 for 3 hours practice time.
  • $35 for each additional hour

Take a virtual tour

You might be taking a class at either our welding lab in Vermilion or the welding stations at the vehicle restoration lab in Lloydminster.

The Trades Centre provides a home for 6 different apprenticeship trades on Lakeland College's Vermilion campus.

Take a look at the classroom and labs through panorama tours as well as photos. You can watch full screen. Use all the controls to see all of the tours and photos as well as the floor plans.

To move around the tour:

  • inside the 360, use your cursor
  • to go to a different tour – go to the top right dropdown or use the double arrows on the bottom control panel
  • use the bottom control to change the view or to make the tour full screen.

Originally developed for the Street Rod Technologies program, this lab is now home to workshops.

There's room for 20 students.

Among its features are:

  • sanding booth
  • paint mixing room
  • paint booth
  • 10-tonne overhead crane
  • frame straightening hooks
  • a classroom
  • viewing deck
  • student lounge
  • office suite

The site also houses our driver training program.
