As an apprentice you’re already learning on the job.  Each training requires a certain minimum of on-the-job hours.

Your technical training here isn’t just hitting the books. You’ll be in the lab putting new concepts and techniques into practice.

Our faculty support you in the classroom, in the lab and to take your skills to another level. In the last 6 years, Lakeland students have won 17 Skills Alberta medals. They've added 4 Skills Canada medals since 2021.

You may get your Skills start at a regional high school competition. Lakeland hosts one of the regional competitions every spring.

What you'll learn

Each trade has three or four training periods for course instruction. Check out some of the skills you'll be practicing. Check the course page for each trade for specific topics and hours.

carpentry apprentice cross cutting

Above an apprentice is crosscutting plywood on cabinet saw for his 1st year project.

4th period heavy equipment work on drive trains

One of the troubleshooting labs for 4th period heavy equipment technicians is checking chassis ride height and drive angles on highway trucks.

This is to eliminate vibrations that can cause expensive breakdowns in the drive train.

As well, students work on transmission rebuilding and troubleshooting issues that they will come across in the field.

They start with Eaton 6 speed transmissions. Their next project is with Eaton 18 speed transmissions.

electrician apprentices

Learning about circuits is a fundamental part of training as an electrician.

For example, part of 1st year classroom instruction is on circuit fundamentals.

As you continue, training becomes more specific. In second year, you'll study alternating current (AC) circuit properties, RLC circuits, and magnetic control and switching circuits.

welding sample

The welding trade has 3 classroom instruction periods.

At Lakeland you'll learn in our updated welding building. Check the virtual tour below to see the shop and booths.

3rd period carpenter finishing drawer

A 3rd period carpenter sands a drawer for his desk project. This is the project that concludes their third year of training.

Constructing the desk puts a number of skills to the test.

power train lab 4th HET

In this powertrain lab the students rebuild and troubleshoot a typical 6 speed manual transmission. They calculate gear ratios, and troubleshoot and repair common failures.

Student trying a tool during demo

Above an apprentice participates in a tool demo during classroom instruction. You'll gain valuable industry connections while you study and work.
