Choose to start your hairstylist career at Lakeland College.
Our 10-month program is industry-recommended. It covers all the required Alberta apprenticeship technical training.
Your primary classroom is the salon. That's where you’ll use and develop your creativity and people skills. You’ll work with real clients, manage the salon and use professional products.
Your training includes:
- cutting and barbering
- styling
- colouring
- texturing – straight, smooth, relax and wave
- hair extensions
- beauty’s business side – professional image, salon management, business plans
Beyond the classroom experiences include:
- guest speakers, including alumni
- salon visits
- competitions

Remember that studying includes other expenses than tuition and fees - you should
also be budgeting for your accommodation and living expenses. Alberta student loan
guidelines recommends $1,153/month.

The listed courses cover the two years of technical training required by Alberta Apprenticeship & Industry Training (AIT).
After you complete your certificate at Lakeland, you must find an employer and become a registered apprentice. You’ll need 2,800 work hours before you write your final journeyperson exam.
AIT changed the required hours effective April 1, 2018. For more information, check the AIT hairstylist profile.
Your weekly class schedule can be found on your My Lakeland student portal when available. This is usually one month prior to the program start date.

Complete your apprenticeship
This certificate completes all of the technical training required for you to become a journeyperson hairstylist.
After graduating from our program, your next step is to find an employer. Then, you'll register as an apprentice and do 2,800 hours of on-the-job training. Contact your local Apprenticeship & Industry Training (AIT) office for more details.
When you finish those hours, you will write the journeyperson exam.
At this time, you may also write an interprovincial red seal exam that gives you credentials to work anywhere in Canada.
Blue seal
If you are interested in running your own business, or if you want to get into management, you can also earn a blue seal. You must complete 150 hours in business subject areas. You may take courses from our business certificate program to earn this seal. To learn more, contact the business enrolment specialist.
